In the Middle Ages, European nobility in the castles had their meal taken in a large great room, which also sat most of the house. The family head table would be placed on a dias in the middle of the room while the rest of the house was organized based on ranking decreasing, away from the main family. There were several tables with benches as trestles as a seat in the hall, where the great majority of the population was sitting.
The concept of a dining room began when the European nobility began to have their dinners in small rooms, private. The rooms were often located further away from the great room and were generally accessed by a grand staircase. Gradually, dining in the great hall became something that was done only during special events.
These days, contemporary Western dining room consists of a large table surrounded by chairs and other furniture like cabinets dressers and bedside tables.
